Although not officially a “holiday”, Administrative Professionals Day is widely recognized throughout the United States and the world. It was originally instituted in 1952 by the National Secretaries Association – whose name has now updated appropriately to the International Association of Administrative Professionals. The organization provides ongoing education, looks to grow global membership, and seeks to set standards of excellence throughout the community.
The annual observance once endeavored to entice people to choose the field as a career. It now recognizes the sometimes thankless work of administrative assistants, receptionists, and other support workers. Administrative workers obviously deserve appreciation. They fill a pivotal role in keeping organizations functioning efficiently and are often considered indispensable to the people who rely on them. Support positions are not easy – but the best admins make it look effortless; taking stress in stride and maintaining a calm and unruffled demeanor. And we think that deserves some recognition!
