National Puppy Day is a grassroots movement that seeks to educate pet owners on several fronts. The organizers want to bring attention to the overpopulation problem in the United States as well as to the need to spay or neuter your pet – but the main purpose for the day is to encourage adoption from shelters. 3.9 million dogs enter shelters each year, and unfortunately 1.4 million are subsequently euthanized. Only 35% of dogs who are in shelters will find a forever home. And although puppies born in shelters certainly have a much higher rate of adoption, founder Colleen Paige wanted to encourage prospective pet parents to visit shelters when ready for a new family member.
Rescue and shelter workers and volunteers are among the most dedicated and passionate people in Kansas City. National Puppy Day is a wonderful opportunity to thank them for their efforts. Did You Know? Contrary to popular belief, only 10% of animals at shelters are surrendered because of behavioral problems. Most were surrendered through no fault of their own and can be loving family members. Shelter/rescue dogs are also generally very well-socialized and will do well with other animals and children.

On National Puppy Day, organizers hope that you will be moved to adopt a puppy (or older dog) from your local shelter. If that is not a possibility, they ask for you to make a donation to a no-kill shelter, so that they may continue their work rescuing dogs and cats from abusive situations and uncertain fates.
