St. Patrick’s Day Traditions

St. Patrick's DayLike Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day is a religious observance that has largely been overshadowed by the cultural celebration that has come to define the day. On St. Patrick’s Day we see large parades with extravagant floats, Irish music festivals at every small pub, and everyone wears green regardless of their heritage. We decorate our homes, offices, and workspaces with green as well – from banners and balloons to exquisite green florals – what are your St. Patrick’s Day traditions?

At Tobler’s Flowers, you’ll find the s and plants you need to paint Kansas City green on March 17th.

  • St. Patrick was not Irish – but the fact that we celebrate an Irish holiday named for a British citizen makes sense. After all, “everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day”.  Patrick, born Maewyn Succat, was a missionary to Ireland and loved his adopted country deeply.
  • The Roman Catholic feast day became an American tradition with the influx of Irish immigrants on the 1700’s and 1800’s. These immigrants primarily settled in New York and Boston, and these two cities still have desnse populations of Irish families.
  • Most major cities host parades, pub crawls, and festivals that celebrate the music and food of Ireland. Chicago dyes the river green for a few hours in honor of the day, and the Empire State Building glows green to join in the fun.
  • It is expected that everyone don at least one green piece of clothing on March 17th. So engrained is this into American culture, that it is also completely acceptable to give a friendly pinch to anyone found in violation.st. patrick's day

When looking for green s to send to your Irish friends on St. Patrick’s Day, green carnations are a popular choice. However, green roses, day lilies, orchids, and chrysanthemums make lovely floral designs; as do Bells of Ireland, green trick dianthus, and zinnias. For truly unique Irish-inspired bouquets and arrangements to send in Kansas City and beyond, call the experts at Tobler’s Flowers. We have the s that make every day more special.
